A few months ago, a friend told me she has been suffering terribly from indigestion. She was hoping I would have some suggestions for her.
I myself have suffered from digestive problems pretty much my whole life. Chronic indigestion has been part of the issue for years.
As I write this, my digestive system is not completely where it should be, but things are a whole lot better than they were. And I am so happy that the indigestion is more or less gone - as long as I am careful to follow the plan I will share with you in a moment.
All the credit goes to God and His health reform principles. They work!
I have found out through trial and error that the best way to clear my indigestion is to fast for a meal or two. Missing a meal doesn't feel nice, but it gets the job done.
It is so interesting to me that my attachment to food seems so much stonger when my stomach is in that oppressed condition of indigestion. Then, it almost seems impossible to be okay with missing a meal.
But skipping a meal or two works well (that is, once I've gathered up the courage to do it)! Going without food gives my stomach a chance to clear and take a rest before having to digest more food.
Oh, how nice it feels to have a clear stomach. Relief!
Once I go back to eating again, I have to be very careful not to go over board and eat too much. Overeating clogs my digestive system and is one of the main causes of indigestion.
If the indigestion is not too bad, or if I really feel adverse to skipping meals, having a few easily digested fruit-only-meals helps too. It just may take a little longer than the complete fasting route.
Intemperate eating is often the cause of sickness, and what nature most needs is to be relieved of the undue burden that has been placed upon her. In many cases of sickness, the very best remedy is for the patient to fast for a meal or two, that the overworked organs of digestion may have an opportunity to rest. A fruit diet for a few days has often brought great relief to brain workers. Many times a short period of entire abstinence from food, followed by simple, moderate eating, has led to recovery through nature’s own recuperative effort. An abstemious diet for a month or two would convince many sufferers that the path of self-denial is the path to health. Ministry of Healing, p. 235.2
Other helpful remedies I use for indigestion are:
Cayenne and Lemon- 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper with the juice of a lemon in some warm water.
Oregano oil - helps my stomach to empty out.
The lifestyle changes that I've made that are helping me to avoid indigestion and give my digestive system a chance to heal are:
The two meal plan - I eat just two meals a day with no snacks in between. This allows my stomach plenty of time for rest and repair once digestion is complete.
Allowing 5-6 hours between meals - 6 hours is really the most ideal for me. We take our breakfast at 7 am and then dinner at 2 pm. This gives my stomach the time it needs to digest and then rest.
Eating less food - I am so surprised to find out through my own experience that I don't need as much food as I thought I did.
Eating nutrient dense whole foods - these foods provide me with the nutrients my body needs to need to feel great and to function well. It is easier not to overeat when the food is nourishing.
Reduce intake of concentrated foods such as nuts, seeds, legumes - eating too large a portion of these foods leaves me with indigestion, so I have figured out from experience just how much my stomach can handle, and try to stay within a reasonable limit. It helps a lot!
Proper food combining - more on this later, but, I literally felt a turn for the better when I started taking this into consideration in preparing my meals. I have better energy too!
Chew slowly - this helps me extract more nutrients so I don't have to overeat to get them all in.
No seconds - I've taken to setting up my plate before starting my meal and then sticking with that. Anytime I think I need more and take more, it has always been the spoonful that tipped me over into that feeling of indigestion. It's amazing to me, that I can think I need more and then discover that I didn't need it after all.
Chamomile, slippery elm - these herbal teas help to soothe my digestive system.
Green drinks - help to provide minerals and nutrients in a form that is easily digested. I am less hungry when I take one daily.
Wait 1-2 hours after meals to start liquids and sip small amounts at a time rather than guzzling by the glassful - this prevents the digesting food from being diluted and disrupted by too much liquid.
Keep extremities warm so that stomach is not congested - Cold feet means there is too much blood in other organs. Too much blood in the stomach hinders digestion.
Update - December 28, 2017 - No more indigestion for me! It's gone, and hopefully for good. I have been consistently eating less food each meal, and have made it a habit not to go back for seconds. It was tough at first, but oh, do worth it. For the first time that I can remember, my stomach feels happy. Yay!!!

Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; Psalm 103:1-3
If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee.
